People who eat a variety of nuts had reduced risk of death from cardiac disease, say studies from Iowa State University and Physicians' Health Study. Pistachios, walnuts and almonds are the most beneficial nuts for heart .
According to recent research published in The Journal of Nutrition, the antioxidants in pistachios, when included in a heart- healthy diet, lowered oxidised LDL concentrations in the blood. On the other hand, walnuts are the only nuts that contain a significant amount of omega- 3 fatty acids. A diet high in omega- 3 fatty acids has shown to improve heart health. Walnuts also benefit bone health. However, almonds win hands down with highest amount of protein, fibre, vitamin E, calcium, riboflavin and niacin compared ounce for ounce with other nuts.
A one- ounce serving of most nuts is only about 160 calories - perfect for snacking, tossing on a salad or sprinkling on prepared chicken or fish.
